Akihabara is the setting of all games from the Akiba's series, which includes Akiba's Trip, Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed, Akiba's Beat and Akiba's Trip Festa!. It is a real-world location in Tokyo, Japan (東京, 日本), known mainly for catering to otaku culture, and thus specialising in goods involving anime, video games, and electronics. It is also famous for its abundant maid cafes and cosplayers. The game is a geographically and culturally accurate representation of the district.
The word Akiba is short for Akihabara (秋葉原) which is a a district in the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo, Japan. The name Akihabara is a shortening of Akibagahara (秋葉が原, "autumn leaf field"), which ultimately comes from Akiba (秋葉), named after a fire-controlling deity of a firefighting shrine built after the area was destroyed by a fire in 1869.
Akihabara gained the nickname Akihabara Electric Town (秋葉原電気街 Akihabara Denki Gai) for being a major shopping center for household electronic goods and the post-war black market. Nowadays, Akihabara is considered by many to be an obsessive-nerd cultural center and a shopping district for video games, anime, manga, and computer goods. Icons from popular anime and manga are displayed prominently on the shops in the area, and numerous maid cafés are found throughout the district. In Akiba's Trip, it is the site for a rebellion of vampire-like creatures called "Kageyashi". In Akiba's Trip 2, it is the main location of running from the pursuers from the beginning of the game and is often visited to go to the hideout known as MOGRA. In Akiba's Beat it is the location for the main game and the site for dungeons and battles.
